Shinto Saw Rasp
I’ve had this doodad for a little over a year now and it’s been worth its weight in gold. It’s a double-sided rasp with coarse teeth on one side (11 tpi) and fine teeth on the other (25 tpi). The Shinto Saw Rasp looks like a bunch of saw blades riveted together. It doesn’t look like a traditional rasp at all.
At 1-1/8″ wide, it’s an aggressive tool that removes a lot of material. I use it as the first step for shaping, then switch to finer rasps and files or a spokeshave for refining. You’ll definitely want to practice on some scraps first because it takes a little getting used to.
The Shinto Saw Rasp is about $20-$25 from Amazon.
Woodpeckers 6″ Paolini Pocket Rule
The 6″ rule is one of those tools that woodworkers use all the time and want to keep within reach. You’ll find one in most shop apron or vest pockets.
The inch model has 1/16″ and 1/32″ scales on both sides. Need a finer measurement? Just flip it over. The end scale is the same way.
What makes this rule special is the sliding stop, which holds the rule upright so that you can use it hands-free for machine set-up, like setting the height of a router bit, saw blade, or dado stack.

I have to confess. I was really on the fence about the Lump Hammer from Crucible Tools for a long time. At $85, it was difficult to justify the price. After all, it was just a hammer.
The Lump is perfect for mortising with a chisel. Even though it’s 2.5 lbs., you get less tired when using it because the hammer is doing most of the work, not your arm.
With an octagonal hickory handle and alloy steel head, the Lump Hammer is made to last a lifetime. The fit and finish is amazing – it’s truly a work of art.
Available from Crucible Tool.
